Check out this interesting article from Strava founder Gareth Nettleton about the dramatic increase in active transportation during COVID and how cities can keep building on that.
For example, he reports that per Strava’s data, the UK alone has seen an increase of 162% in active travel in 2020.
He argues for “future proofing” our cities for cycling, stating: “The global pandemic has made it apparent that active travel is the way forward, but only if we choose to fully embrace it.”
Interesting note: Strava generates massive data about where its huge base of users rides, runs, walks, skis, etc. (If you want to see where people bike in Wilmette, take a look at this Strava “heatmap.”) Strava has announced that it’s making its data product, Strava Metro, free for cities.
