WILMETTE – The Village of Wilmette Transportation Commission is taking charge of Active Transportation. In the past, it was unclear who within Village government was responsible to begin discussion about bicycling, walking and related new forms of mobility. Over the past several years, and noticeably during the pandemic, active transportation has grown enormously in importance across the country and within our Village. The Village’s Complete Streets Policy already encourages the Village to consider safety and accessibility for all roadway users in designing and maintaining the public way. But pedestrians, bicyclists, and users of other mobility devices, and public transit were not specifically named in the Municipal Code. Thanks to advocacy by Bike Walk Wilmette, the Village Board changed that and officially puts the ball in the court of the Transportation Commission. And the Commission has also been charged with the task of annually updating and providing guidance on the implementation of Wilmette’s new Master Bike and Active Transportation Plan.
