Wilmette Pedals to Success: Securing Bronze Status as a Bicycle Friendly Community Once Again

WILMETTE – The Village of Wilmette has once again made its mark on the map of bicycle-friendly communities. The League of American Bicyclists, a prestigious national organization dedicated to promoting cycling and bike-friendly environments, has re-awarded Wilmette the coveted Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) status. This distinction places Wilmette among the highest-ranked communities in Illinois, sharing the honor with Normal, IL.

This achievement is a testament to the relentless efforts and dedication of the volunteers at Bike Walk Wilmette, who worked tirelessly throughout last summer, meticulously completing numerous application forms. Our hard work, combined with the invaluable support and input from Village staff, has been instrumental in securing this recognition. The renewal of the Bronze status, first awarded to Wilmette in 2018, is valid through 2027, affirming the Village’s ongoing commitment to fostering a safe and vibrant cycling culture.

A Community Effort

The journey to this accomplishment was not without its challenges. The application process for the BFC status is rigorous, requiring detailed documentation and evidence of the community’s efforts to support cycling. The criteria, known as the 5 Es, encompass Equity & Accessibility, Engineering, Education, Encouragement, and Evaluation & Planning. Each of these elements plays a crucial role in shaping a community that is not only bike-friendly but also inclusive and accessible to all.

Wilmette’s success in meeting these criteria is a reflection of its collective spirit and the collaborative efforts between Bike Walk Wilmette volunteers (local cyclists and bike advocates), and the Village staff. This partnership has been pivotal in creating a biking environment that caters to the needs of all residents, regardless of their age, ability, or cycling proficiency.

Building a Better Biking Nation

The League of American Bicyclists, through its BFC awards, recognizes communities like Wilmette that are leading the way in creating environments conducive to cycling. The award is more than just a badge of honor; it is a reflection of a community’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents through sustainable and healthy transportation options.

In the words of Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists, the award is “a testament to the dedication of the growing network of changemakers who are responding to the League raising the standard of what it means to be a Bicycle Friendly Community.”

The Impact of Bronze Status

The Bronze BFC status carries significant implications for Wilmette. It positions the Village as a leader in promoting cycling, attracting more cyclists, and potentially inspiring other communities to follow suit. It also lays the groundwork for future improvements and advancements in cycling infrastructure and programs.

The BFC Report Card, which will be sent to the Village, provides tailored feedback and suggestions for further enhancing the cycling experience in Wilmette. The Village plans to use this feedback to continue its efforts in making cycling a safe, enjoyable, and practical choice for transportation and recreation.

Looking Ahead

As Wilmette celebrates this remarkable achievement, the focus now shifts to maintaining this momentum and striving for even higher levels of recognition in the future. The Bronze status is not just a culmination but a stepping stone towards greater accomplishments in making Wilmette an exemplary bicycle-friendly community. With continued collaboration, innovation, and a shared vision, Wilmette is poised to pedal towards a greener, healthier, and more connected future.
